CrossFitting since: August 2017
Favourite WOD: “FILTHY FIFTY” and “KAREN”
What I hate to see on the board: Overhead Squats – but I do need the practice!
Favourite lift: Deadlifts.
Biggest transformation I’ve experienced as a result of being with CrossFit Auckland: My biggest transformation has been gaining a better appreciation for my body – in the past I always wanted to be ‘skinny’ and focused on being a particular size or weight. However since starting at CrossFit I’ve really learnt to love being strong. I would have absolutely no idea what I weigh as that number no longer matters to me – I’m fit, strong and doing something I love and that is now way more important. As a by-product I feel fantastic and have a level of confidence that wasn’t there before starting.
Most memorable CrossFit moment: I just competed my first competition (Two 2 Tango), ahead of the last workout I was knackered and honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to do it – but my adrenaline (and competitive side) kicked in and my partner Dave and I smashed it. It was such an amazing feeling to walk away from 2 days of competition on such a high!
Before CrossFit: I would skirt around the gym without too much of a plan, I have run a few marathons and would like to keep my running up (at shorter distances).
Life outside CrossFit: I keep busy as an EA at an engineering company, luckily they are pretty supportive of flexible working (which is why I’m always at different classes). I have a great group of friends and our social life is based around nice food and drink. My boyfriend and I love exploring NZ and are always out and about camping and doing roadies when we can. I also love to travel – this year I did Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and I am hoping to get back over to Europe in 2019.
Favourite meal: Earlier this year I gave up meat with feet and am now a pescaterian, I make a really good teriyaki salmon ramen that is one of my favourites.
Favourite movie: The Departed.
Favourite band or artist: Sorry that’s way too hard, my music taste is so broad! I love live music, I live with a really good friend who is a music nut and we tend to go to quite a few gigs of all genres together.
If you were to recommend CFAK to your best friend, what would you say?
JUST TRY IT!! I think CrossFit has this incorrect image of being buff people dropping barbells and yelling, it just isn’t the case at CFAK. There will always be something in CrossFit that you can do well, and always be something you can seek to improve on – you’ll be supported, feel good about yourself and meet some pretty rad people while doing it!
